Read To Succeed Receives $5,000 “A Community Thrives” Grant!

We are thrilled to announce that Read To Succeed will receive a $5,000 Local Operating Grant for Adult Literacy Programs! Read To Succeed was announced as a grant recipient of A Community Thrives, a grantmaking and crowd-funding program from the USA TODAY NETWORK and a part of the Gannett Foundation. We will receive a $5,000 grant for our adult literacy programs, which provides one-on-one tutoring in basic literacy, English Second Language classes, English Conversation Hour, and citizenship classes.

A Community Thrives supports nonprofit organizations with projects focused on community building and has helped to contribute more than $12 million since 2017. This year, A Community Thrives engaged participants in 45 states, and Read To Succeed was named a grant winner.

We offer free literacy programs and services to adults and children in Rutherford County. The A Community Thrives grant will support the our goal to help adults improve their literacy skills and gain the tools to be active members in the local community.

This grant will allow us to continue providing literacy resources to our adult learner. First, we want to thank everyone who supported us during the A Community Thrives fundraiser. On top of the $3,105 we fundraised, we also received a local operating grant from the Gannett Foundation. As we continue to adapt our classes and tutoring programs to reach learners virtually, these funds will be instrumental in the adult literacy program’s success.

Our Adult Literacy program works with adults to provide free one-on-one tutoring and English as Second Language (ESL) classes. All tutors and teachers are required to go through a training before working with the learners to meet their literacy goals. Currently, our tutoring is taking place virtually. As for ESL classes, the teachers utilize Google Classroom and meet with the students via Zoom twice a week. Most ESL students have the goal of speaking and understanding written directions within their job, communicating with their children (some children don’t speak their native language and communication with their parents is difficult), or obtaining their citizenship.

The funds from The Community Thrives Grant will be utilized to purchase books, supplies, materials, and the newest necessary component: digital subscriptions for our learners.
