Youth & Family Literacy

Read To Succeed’s Youth and Family Literacy programs serve the child, the adult, and the entire family. With three key programs offered at Title 1 Schools in Rutherford County, as well as select housing developments, Read To Succeed aims to bring the family together to celebrate literacy and the joy of reading. All of our programs (Family Literacy Nights, AdLit, and Imagination Station) address the participants’ specific literacy needs.

Family Literacy Nights

Family Literacy Nights provide reading time and supervised literacy activities for families. Families meet for 1 to 2 hours for one night at their school. The school invites up to 150 students and their families to participate. MTSU education students create and lead fun art, music, and literacy activities related to a carefully chosen book. MTSU, volunteers, and Read To Succeed staff provide guidance, support, and supervision. RTS provides a meal from a local restaurant to serve each participant.

Imagination Station

Imagination Station is a parent-child small group program to encourage the love of reading in toddler and preschool-age children. Parent and child participate in reading and activity stations based on books by popular children’s authors. Each child is given a copy of the book to take home. Reading tips and resources are provided. Read To Succeed also provides a healthy snack for each participant.

AdLit (Adolescent Literacy)

AdLit works with Rutherford County middle and high schools to provide age-appropriate, engaging reading to adolescent readers. Through the program, a curated book is provided to each participating student. The chosen books are contemporary young adult fiction with themes and characters that students today find relatable to their own experiences. The group then reads and engages in conversation about the story and themes with their peers and a group of adult discussion leaders, including school administrative sponsors, community members, MTSU students, and Read To Succeed’s Youth and Family Literacy Team. This discourse of literature places the students on a level plane where everyone brings something to the table. Through this authentic environment of discussing plot, characters, and life, and sharing memorable reading experiences, we build a space for reading for enrichment and pleasure. It also fosters a sense of community and a shared experience for the students.

AdLit is made possible by a collaboration with ProjectLIT Community and the generous donations made by our supporters.

Classroom Library

We proudly support teachers and supply 25 new/gently used children’s books to new teachers working at any school district within Rutherford County. We hope these books will continue to support teachers and help children find a love for literacy.
