Preparation Read
To Succeed's
Family Literacy programs offer a free, healthy meal to each
participant. We find that offering this meal is not only a great way to
get the families to sit down together and eat, but also to ensure
focused, excited students when it comes time to read and do activities
involving the book. We have three main family literacy programs:Families That Read, Succeed, which is held at a Title 1 School for four consecutive weeks, with a two hour session each week. RTS works with an MTSU education class to conduct these programs. Each week centers around a particular book, and after the students read the book aloud with an MTSU class member, they have fun with activities related to the book. FTRS is offered to about 20 students and their families. Meals for this program need to serve up to 100 people (this includes the MTSU class and other volunteers who work hard to put this program together)--so this endeavour is best taken by a group that can accommodate cooking or purchasing a meal of this size (a civic group, a church group, or a local business or organization). Family Literacy Nights serve one school for one particular night. Up to 100 students and their families are invited to attend. Meals for this program need to serve up to 250 people (this includes the MTSU class and other volunteers who work hard to put this program together)--so this endeavour is best taken by a group that can accommodate cooking or purchasing a meal of this size (a civic group, a church group, or a local business or organization). Imagination Station currently serves two locations, Franklin Heights and Spring Valley housing developments. Children from 6 months to 6 years and their parents who live in the particular housing development are invited out once a month to read a book, do arts and crafts or an activity centered around the book, and to eat lunch. Meals for this program need to serve up to 15-20 people. Meal Deliveries to
Schools
Read To Succeed needs volunteers
who are able to drive to local restaurants and deliver a large meal to
schools participating in our family literacy programs. Volunteers
should commit to serving a particular school for the entire duration of
the program. For Families That Read, Succeed, this means delivering a
meal once a week for four consecutive weeks. For Family Literacy
Nights, this means delivering a meal only once. This is a fun, easy way
to get involve with our family literacy programs--because this meal is
crucial to their success. Although a designated MTSU education class handles the curriculum and the execution of that curriculum during our programs, Read To Succeed always needs volunteer to lend a helping hand. During Families That Read, Succeed or Family Literacy Nights, this could mean helping serve food, helping clean up, helping to give out books, helping to organize and direct students and their families to their next location, or any other crucial task. Book Donation Organization Read To Succeed receives several book donations. From time to time, we need volunteer help to organize our inventory, label our inventory, and keep track of our inventory. One-on-One Tutors Read To Succeed is always looking for more tutors to enter our program. Currently, we have an even higher need for tutors in North Rutherford County. Tutors in our Adult Literacy program are required to attend a 12-hour training before he or she can begin. After you start tutoring, you will meet 1-2 times a week for an hour or two each time at a mutually-convenient, public place. You will be required to submit a monthly report and a quarterly test. Get Started! Tutors Read To Succeed volunteers will meet with adult learners at local Get Started! sites to work on literacy-related life skills, such as banking, resume writing, completing applications, and reading menus. By having met a personal life-skill goal, adults will be encouraged to continue learning with a Read To Succeed Adult Literacy Program tutor. Get Started! sites include Linebaugh Library, Smyrna Library, LaVergne Library, Myrtle Lord Glanton Library in Patterson Park, Greenhouse Ministries, Community Servants in Smyrna, The Lon Nuell Family Literacy Center in First Baptist Church.
