Dear RTS Friends,

Happy Spring! Isn’t it great to see the buds on the trees and the flowers starting to bloom? This time of year always make me think of new beginnings and we have some of those to share with you. First the sad news that Sarah Porterfield who has been such an asset to our program for over three years is leaving us to take a position with Navigation Advertising. We thank Sarah for helping us grow our family literacy program and for helping raise awareness for Read To Succeed through her wonderful promotions talents. We hope to keep her involved as a volunteer and through outsourcing some of our needs, but we will definitely miss her daily presence at the Lon Nuell Literacy Center.

The good news is we have found a worthy replacement for Sarah and it is someone that most of you already know – Kristina Brown. Kristina has already begun training with Sarah and is doing an amazing job. Please join me in supporting both of these great ladies in their new endeavors.

Read To Succeed has plenty of opportunities to get involved in the next few weeks! Please check our website calendar and watch our facebook page for information on all our upcoming programs and volunteer when you can by contacting Debbie Mankin at debbiemankin@readtosucceed.org.

Thanks so much for all you do to support Read To Succeed and please let us know anytime you have
ideas or suggestions for new ways that we can increase literacy in Rutherford County.

Till next month,
Lisa Mitchell

Read To Succeed Honors Alice Hardin

Alice Hardin was a tutor for Read To Succeed for 2 years. She worked with one learner during that time. She was always patient and kind toward her learner and anyone else she encountered in the Literacy Center. Alice will be truly missed by many staff and volunteers at Read To Succeed.

The Adult Literacy Program has undergone some changes to make tutoring easier for our volunteers. The training is now 4 hours with an online component. Read To Succeed is hoping to grow the program by making it easier for volunteers to get started so that learners have a shorter waiting periods. We are currently in need of more tutors.

More information may be viewed at www.readtosucceed.org. Please contact Shelly Stanley at

to sign-up.

Don't forget to visit The One Book page to let us know what you think about 2013's choice, The Fault in Our Stars. One entrant from the web site will be chosen for a Barnes & Noble gift card in June.

The 2013 Book Crossing is in effect. Red boxes with copies of “The Fault in Our Stars” are available at 8 locations throughout Rutherford County. Thanks to Ingram Content Group, Read To Succeed has been able t replenish all the boxes with new books. People can pick up a copy of the book, read it, and post their thoughts and reviews on the OB Facebook page and the web page on the RTS site. The copies of the books can be returned to any of the 8 locations. Members of the OB committee have committed to checking the boxes and keeping track of circulation.

The sites are: Linebaugh Main Library, JoZoara’s Coffee Shop, Starbucks on South Rutherford, Starbucks on Church Street, Pa Bunk’s, MTMC Main Lobby, YMCA in Smyrna and the Smyrna Library.

Gift certificates and gift cards to be used in gift baskets or as incentives for adult learners achieving a goal.

Gently used children, teen, and
adult books.

Read To Succeed will host its first ever Health Literacy Night at Barfield Elementary on April 16 with Dr. Cathy Crooks' class. The program will use the book Oh, the Things You Can Do That Are Good for You to focus on literacy and health.

We held our Me & My Family Night at Black Fox in March and more than 800 people showed up, and we gave out more than hundreds of books! It was our biggest event yet.

Me & My Family Night

It's shaping up to be a busy semester! Read To Succeed will host family literacy events at the following schools this spring:

Kittrell Elementary

Smyrna Primary

Walter Hill Elemetary

Cedar Grove Elementary

      Buchanan Elementary

      Bradley Academy

      Barfield Elementary

We always need volunteers to help us serve food and pass out books at these events, so
let us know if you'd like to help!

With help from our volunteers at Olive Branch Church, our Imagination Station at Franklin Heights continues to improve.

In March, Imagination Station expanded to the Wherry Housing Community in Smyrna and Mid-Cumberland HeadStart in Murfreesboro.

Read To Succeed needs several volunteers for our family literacy programs. Volunteers will help serve food, pass out books, and make our literacy nights as successful as possible. Volunteers can commit anywhere from a one-hour shift to multiple one-two hour shifts.

Meet Read To Succeed's February's Shining Star Volunteers, the Zietz Family.

Michael and Olivia Zietz, ages 16 and 14, and their mother Emily have been volunteering for Read To Succeed’s Family Literacy programs for the past year, helping translate for ELL families and serve food. They have been invaluable volunteers to our organization. Thank you for your dedication to literacy!
