Family Lit

Read To Succeed's Family Literacy programs serve the child, the adult, and the entire family. With three key programs offered at Title 1 Schools in Rutherford County, as well as select housing developments, Read To Succeed aims to bring the family together to celebrate literacy and the joy of reading. All of our programs--Families That Read, Succeed, Family Literacy Nights, and Imagination Station--address specific literacy needs of the participants. These needs are identified before the program begins and focused on, including skills in phonics, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, and phonemic awareness.

FTRS
Families That Read, Succeed provides reading time and supervised literacy activities for families. Families meet for 1 to 2 hours weekly for four consecutive weeks at their school.  MTSU education students create and lead fun art, music, and literacy activities related to a carefully chosen book.  MTSU, Success By 6, and Read To Succeed staff and Council members provide guidance, support, and supervision.  RTS provides a meal from a local restaurant or prepared by a local civic or religious group to serve each participant.

The goal of Families That Read, Succeed is to foster the enjoyment of reading in Rutherford County families. This program helps parents feel more confident in sharing books with their children, models "active reading" for parents, and creates a venue for family members to enjoy quality time together.  Parents are offered free tutoring if they are interested in advancing their reading skills and every family goes home with a new book, to keep, every week.

When families read together, they succeed!

FLN
Family Literacy Nights are similar in goal to the Families That Read, Succeed program. Family Literacy Nights provide reading time and supervised literacy activities for families. Families meet for 1 to 2 hours for one night at their school. The school invites up to 150 students and their families to participate.

Imst
Imagination Station is a parent-child small group program to encourage the love of reading in toddler and preschool age children. Parent and child participate in reading and activity stations based on books by popular children's authors. Reading tips and resources are provided. A Read To Succeed staff member, Council member, partner or volunteer also provides a healthy lunch for each participant. Each participating child goes home with a copy of the book they read to keep.
