Families
That
Read,
Succeed

Families That Read, Succeed
provides reading time and supervised literacy activities for families.  Financed by a generous Community Block Development Grant from the City of Murfreesboro, sessions are currently running at Mitchell-Nelson Primary, Barfield Elementary and the Bellwood-Bowdion Pre School.  Families meet for 1 to 2 hours weekly for four consecutive weeks at their school.  MTSU education students create and lead fun art, music, and literacy activities related to a carefully chosen book.  MTSU, Success By 6, and Read To Succeed staff and Council members provide guidance, support, and supervision.  A meal is provided by partners such as the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Business Education Partnership, Publix, and Panera Bread.

The goal of Families That Read, Succeed is to foster the enjoyment of reading in Murfreesboro families. This program helps parents feel more confident in sharing books with their children, models "active reading" for parents, and creates a venue for family members to enjoy quality time together.  Parents are offered free tutoring if they are interested in advancing their reading skills and every family goes home with a new book, to keep, every week.

When families read together, they succeed!
