Read To Succeed's Adult Literacy Program started
in January 2005 to serve the following mission:
The Read To Succeed Adult Literacy Program will address the
basic literacy needs of adults in Rutherford County who want to develop
their skills for personal and/or career development.
The Adult Literacy Program works with adults 18 years-of-age and older
to provide one-on-one tutoring in basic literacy at no cost to the
learner. The program provides a free 12-hour training course to teach
volunteer tutors how to work with adults. The tutors are then paired
one-on-one with adult learners. Throughout the year, inservice training
is offered to the tutors at no cost. In addition, the program provides
the basic literacy materials needed for the tutoring process. Read To
Succeed currently has 53 tutor-learner pairs, though this number
fluctuates throughout the year, usually peaking in the spring and
summer.
The Adult Literacy Program also offers free
ESL classes
at several
locations throughout Rutherford County.

As
a Read To Succeed Adult Literacy tutor, you will meet 1 - 2 times a week for
an hour or two each time with your designated learner. You will meet at a
mutually-convenient, public place. Tutors are required to first attend a
12-hour training before they can begin. Once enrolled, you will be required
to submit a monthly report and a quarterly test. If you want to become a
tutor, please call
